Australia Student Visa Changes: What You Need to Know

Australia has introduced significant changes to its international student policies, affecting visa requirements, post-study work options and application processes. These updates aim to better regulate student intake while ensuring genuine applicants are prioritized.

Below is the clear breakdown of the key changes.

Getting In: Updated Visa Requirements

he financial and application requirements for student visas have been revised.

The minimum savings requirement has increased to AUD $29,710, reflecting the rising cost of living in Australia. In addition, the visa application fee has seen a sharp rise — from AUD $710 previously, to AUD $1,600 in 2024, and further to AUD $2,300 from July 2025.

Another major change is the removal of the traditional essay-style application. This has been replaced with targeted, evidence-based questions designed to assess whether an applicant is a genuine student.

Student Numbers and Visa Prioritisation

While Australia has not introduced a strict cap on international students, a new visa prioritisation system has been implemented.

Under this system, institutions that exceed 80% of their allocated student capacity may experience slower processing times for new applications. This approach allows the government to manage intake without enforcing a fixed limit.

Importantly, research degree students are exempt from these restrictions.

Post-Study Work Visa (Subclass 485) Changes

The duration of post-study work visas is now directly linked to the level of qualification:

18 months for diploma holders
2 years for bachelor’s and master’s coursework graduates
3 years for research-based master’s and PhD graduates

Additionally, the age limit has been reduced from 50 to 35 for most applicants, significantly impacting eligibility for post-study work opportunities.

Restrictions on Onshore Visa Switching

New rules also restrict visa transitions within Australia.

Individuals holding Visitor visas or Temporary Graduate visas are no longer allowed to apply for a student visa while inside the country. Applicants must now apply from offshore.

Conclusion

These changes mark a significant shift in Australia’s international education policy. Students planning to study in Australia should carefully review these updates and ensure they meet the new requirements before applying.
