Things You Should Know Before Thinking of Applying to Study in the UK
Studying in the UK is a dream for thousands of Nepali students every year. But before you start comparing universities, booking an English test, or paying your first tuition deposit, there are a few things you need to understand about the actual cost of studying in the UK from Nepal.
Tuition fees are only one part of the picture. Your English qualification can affect your starting fees and scholarship options, while your university's location, CAS deposit, visa application fee, Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), TB test, and other upfront expenses can significantly increase the amount you need to budget before you even leave Nepal.
There are also important rules around student work hours, attendance, English-language requirements, and post-study work options that can affect your finances and your plans after graduation.
So, how much does it really cost to study in the UK from Nepal? What should you budget for before applying? And what should you know before paying a university or submitting your UK student visa application?
This guide breaks down the tuition fees and CAS deposits available through our current UK university options, along with the visa, medical and other upfront costs you should plan for. We also cover English-language options, student work rules and post-study opportunities so you can make a more informed decision before applying.
UK Tuition Fees & CAS Deposits for Nepali Students
For our current university options, your English qualification and whether you choose a university inside or outside London can affect the fee package available to you. Generally, the better your English qualification, the lower your starting fees after scholarships. Standard Bachelor’s degrees are 3 years (including International Year One), while Foundation paths (International Year Zero) take 4 years.

Master's Options: What Can You Get For Your Budget
The Paperwork You Can't Get Wrong & The English Waiver Trick
Before you start worrying about tuition fees and visa appointments, get your paperwork right. A missing document, an unexplained gap or an inconsistency in your application can create unnecessary problems later.
Get Your Documents Ready From the Start
Don't wait until your university asks for a document before you start looking for it. Having everything prepared early can make the application process considerably smoother.
Here's the English Waiver Trick
Now look back at the fee options above. If your Grade 12 English result already meets your university's English requirement, you may not need to sit IELTS or another English test at all.
That's potentially one less test to book, one less expense to budget for and one less hurdle before you start your application. But don't assume a waiver applies everywhere — requirements vary by university and course, so always check your specific eligibility before skipping an English test.
And if you have a C in Grade 12 English, don't assume that the UK is off the table either. Some pathway options can provide an alternative route into your degree, although they may add time and cost to your overall study plan.
And If You Do Need an English Test?
If your chosen university accepts it, we'd strongly suggest considering the Duolingo English Test (DET).
The biggest advantage? Cost. DET is significantly more affordable than IELTS and PTE, while still meeting the English-language requirement for universities that accept it. You can also take the test online, receive results faster and avoid the additional time and hassle of travelling to a test centre.
Many students also find DET's format more comfortable than IELTS, and a target score of 105 is considered achievable by many students. However, don't choose a test simply because someone says it's easier. Always check that your university and course accept DET and confirm the required score.
If you can meet your university's requirement with DET, why spend more on IELTS or PTE?

Students become eligible for the Graduate Route Visa after successfully completing their course. However, note that if you apply after January 2027, the Graduate Route will be limited to 18 months. This makes our recommendation for a Master's with a placement year even more critical to maximize your career timeline.
